— Cindy, Youth Care Worker
I just wanted to take an opportunity to thank all the Youth Care Workers who work at Lad Lake for all they do. When thinking about the words that I wanted to use to convey my appreciation, I thought about how the Youth Care Worker stands apart from other mental health professionals. Although I am sure there are many, a couple of ways stand out to me.
Unlike many mental health professionals who address different aspects of the adolescent’s life from a distance, the Youth Care Workers engage with the residents in their environment. This includes all of the activities at Lad Lake, as well as the other places where various needs (medical, recreational, etc.) are met. As a result, the relationship between the resident and the Youth Care Worker is characterized by immediacy, intensity, and intimacy.
Another characteristic of the Youth Care Worker’s relationship with the resident is that it is truly holistic. While many mental health professionals claim to be addressing the whole person, it is the Youth Care Worker who actually does. Youth Care Workers are there for the residents whenever and for whatever reason they are needed. Furthermore, the variety of activities that they engage in with our residents is considerable: from teaching skills to disciplining to playing games to helping with homework to nursing an illness to comforting after a nightmare in the middle of the night.
The importance of the Youth Care Worker to this agency is recognized and appreciated. Thank You.
